The History of Philanthropy

Giving, in the form of donations, philanthropy, or volunteering, seems like so much an ingrained part of our culture and ideals that it seems strange that such selflessness would even have an origin.

Humans are hardwired to help one another; a study published in 2013 from the University of Virginia showed that the brain activity of participants was nearly identical when mild harm was threatened to the participant and when the same threat was extended to a close friend. We care about the safety and wellbeing of people in our lives nearly as much as we care about our own, so it’s not a shock that we would choose to help other people around us who we can identify are in pain. But when did all of this giving get started?

The word “philanthropy” itself comes from the Late Latin and Greek philanthropia c. 1600, meaning loving (phil-)  and mankind (-anthropos), or a love for mankind. The concept is as old as the world itself, as history shows us that humankind has long depended on the kindness of others to get by.

Ancient Mediterraneans had tenets of philanthropy that we still see today. In the laws that governed the land, Babylonian kings called for any of the ‘strong’ who bullied the ‘weak’ to be punished, and their folklore told similar stories of benevolent kings who succeeded while selfish, cold-hearted kings met a just and harsh fate. Similar ethos can be seen in the Ancient Greeks as well, whose models of tax exemption for charitable deeds is still used and borrowed from today.

Following the fall of the medieval ages, during the period of reformation, the status quo and social hierarchy of society all throughout Europe changed; the models of lords and servants was reformed as cultural monoliths like rural feudalism and the Catholic church lost their monopolistic hold on society. This returned a large portion of the power to the people which meant it was now in a position to effect change.

Following the first World War and at the end of an age of prosperity, philanthropy in the United States was once again a major tenant of societal actions, but this time it took on yet another different approach. Change began happening on a community level, where outreach saw a more inclusive and effective forms of philanthropy.

Over the years, acts of charitable giving in the United States has been on a steady incline. This is partly due to the desire for tax incentives as well as a renewed faith in the scientific evidence that points the the endless personal and societal benefits of philanthropy and giving in general.

Philanthropy Culture

Much like many other industries and organizations, the overall culture is extremely important to how successful they are. The same goes for philanthropy. In order to run an organization, and do it well, is to create a culture that inspires and means something to those involved. Donor Focus

Every employee and volunteer should alway be looking through a donor focus. What are things they like us doing? What do they not like? Knowing these things and reacting to them as quickly as possible is a donor focused approach. All employees should be internalizing the importance of your donors and treating everything they do with that in mind.

Team Effort

Another huge part of an effective philanthropy culture is the teamwork and camaraderie. Without team cohesiveness, you’ll fall behind. Teamwork and building great teams is something the culture absorbs in. Then you end up with a team who lives and breathes collaborations because of it. Employees who feel empowered by creativity and new ideas are more likely to come forward with them than a less welcoming culture.

Communicate Freely

Communication is an important part of every single aspect of our lives. In forging a culture that creates meaningful communication, you end up with less headaches. The root of most issues in the workplace is a breakdown in communication. If this isn’t a significant part of your overall culture – it should be.

Be Thankful

As a philanthropic organization, you rely a lot on the goodwill of others. As an organization, it’s best to show gratitude by always being thankful. All things, big and small, help shape your organization into what it is today. Instituting thankfulness as a pillar of your organization’s culture is an excellent way to always be happy with that you’re able to accomplish.

When it comes to giving, we tend to focus on the need we see at home first with the intention of fixing the problem on the micro level before fixing it on the macro level. However, often times we get so caught up in the work we’re doing around us that we forget that there are other places around the globe in dire need of attention and assistance.   • United Nations Foundation

Born in 1998 from a $1 billion donation from Ted Turner, the United Nations Foundation helps to extend the reach of the United Nations. The United Nations is the only global organization that has the outreach and the footprint to truly enact change on a global level, and since it first began, it has consistently donated an average of $0.92 of each dollar that’s raised directly to causes and programs created by the United Nations.

  • Helen Keller International

Around the globe, approximately 285 million people are visually impaired with 39 million of those people being legally blind. Of all of the people with visual impairments, approximately 90% of them live in areas of low income. Helen Keller International, which was founded in 1915, is dedicated in the fight to save sight and assist the lives of those who are most “vulnerable and disadvantaged.” They are not only committed to proper eye health, but also to providing nourishment and helping to improve the health of those in need.

  • United States World Fund for UNICEF

Short for the United Nations International Children’s Fund, UNICEF’s mission is to is to protect and fight for the rights of every child on Earth through collecting funds to provide these children with food, water, medications, education, and emergency relief. For over 70 years, UNICEF has been active in more than 190 countries working to ensure that every child is given their right to “survive, thrive, and fulfill their potential — to the benefit of a better world. Their annual total revenue clocks in at just about $513 million.

Are You Vetting Nonprofits Before You Give?

Giving to charities is a great way to help out the community and make the world a better place– until you find out that the charity you donate to actually doesn’t use all of the money that you donated. In fact, many charities actually spend more money paying volunteers, fundraisers, and operators than they donate to organizations. If you’re an advocate donor, it’s important to choose your charities carefully. Here is what you should look out for to ensure your gift is supporting the most of the organizations.

Program Spending

One of the first places to decide if you should donate to a specific charity is to see how they spend their money. For example, many charities will say that $1 of every proceed will go to that specific charity, while others don’t disclose this information. A good idea is to your research and read the fine print when donating to charities. Every non-profit organization has to fill out a 990 form with the IRS which will disclose how much money they will spend on costs throughout the year. This will also disclose where the money is going and whether or not the program is spending their money as they say they will.

C-Level Compensation

Another tricky thing that is rarely disclosed is the compensation of workers and c-level executives. For example, these are the highest paid non-profit CEOs. But where did that money come from? Donations. This is also another reason why it is important to do your research before you decide who to give to. Other employees may be getting paid higher salaries than they are actually claiming from the charities. Many charities also have to pay volunteers compensation and private fundraisers. In this case, it is very easy for charities to pay out way more than they actually donate as well. Verifying through the 990 form will help you decide whether it is worth donating to that specific charity or not.

How Are Donations Being Asked For?

Consider how donations are being asked before you decide if you should donate. For example, a true non-profit organization or charity should be able to provide you a federal tax ID for IRS and tax deduction purposes. If this isn’t available, it’s possible that this charity could be hoax. Charities will also never ask for personal information such as a bank account number or money wiring. This creates a red flag hazard and should be reported immediately. If you do donate, be sure to use safe payment services so that your accounts are safe and secure.

As technology has greatly enhanced, so has the way that charities and fundraisers raise money. Before the use of the internet and cell phones, non-profit organizations had to use the good old fashioned door-to-door marketing technique to raise awareness and collect donations. Now however, nonprofits are able to use the same concept with the click of a button. Instead, all they have to do is create a fundraiser and share it on their various social sites and gain donors. No more stand by telephone receivers awaiting your call. It’s no secret that giving to and helping others is a great way to make a difference in the lives of others. What might come as a surprise is that giving might even do more on a personal level to benefit you than the people you’re helping. Giving has a way of making us feel good like nothing else can.       • Dopamine – the feel good chemical that stimulates the brain’s pleasure centers and promotes the desire to do the same activity again.
      • Endorphins – the chemical released in the body when you exercise that helps to reduce stress levels. It also acts as your body’s natural pain reliever and can induce a sense of euphoria as seen in things like the ‘runner’s high.’
      • Oxytocin –  the “hug chemical” released in our bodies during moments of intimacy and connection with one another, like kissing or breastfeeding.

The chemicals released when we volunteer are the same as those we feel any other time that we feel good about the good that we’re doing. So not only do we feel rewarded and more connected to others, we also want to pursue the same actions for the same results.

  • It makes us happier.

In 2008, a professor at Harvard Business School named Michael Norton, alongside a few of his associates, discovered that, when given a certain amount of money, people felt happier about giving it away to someone else than they did spending it on themselves. Think about that: people feel happier giving to other people than they do giving to themselves. The kind of happiness that giving and volunteering can elicit is one that fills us all the way through, working from the inside out.

    • Perhaps the most household business on the list, Walmart was founded in 1962 and is an American-based multinational retail chain operating out of 28 countries with more than 11,500 stores worldwide. Walmart operates a number of charities that operate on both a national and multinational level, striving to help those in areas stricken by hunger, malnourishment, and disasters. In 2015, Walmart’s total amount donated was $301 million.
  3. Wells Fargo
    • Wells Fargo is one of the largest banks in the country, so much so that it employs about 1 in 600 of Americans in the workforce and serves a third of all American households. It has earned a reputation as a well-respected financial institution, receiving praise from Barron’s magazine and Forbes’s alike for outstanding customer service. Each year, the business supports thousands of local and national nonprofits working to better their communities, and donated $281.3 million in 2015.
  4. Goldman Sachs Group
    • An American-based finance business that operates on a multinational level, Goldman Sachs was founded in 1869 to help its clients manage their finances, and now provides prime brokerage, advice on acquisitions and mergers, underwriting services, and asset management to all of its clients. In 2008, Goldman Sachs pledged to give more of its capital to help the underprivileged, donating over $1.6 billion since then and $276.4 million in the year 2015 alone.
  5. ExxonMobil
    • American-based ExxonMobil is the largest publicly traded international gas and oil company in the world, operating for 17 years. Exxon’s philanthropic outreach operates through the ExxonMobil Foundation where it focuses primarily on promoting change through fighting malaria as well as creating opportunities for women to find economic stability and further their education in math and science. In 2015, ExxonMobil charitably gave $268 million.

Lloyd Claycomb Competes in Amateur Derby Finals

National Cutting Horse Association holds annual derby races for horsemen of all levels. Lloyd Claycomb was thrilled to compete in the Amateur Derby Finals by the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA). A long-term horse enthusiast, he is an avid supporter of the NCHA.

The NCHA held its first show was held in Dublin, Texas, in the fall of 1946. By 1963, the association recorded the results of 727 events, of which 504 were recognized as NCHA championship events. In those days, cutters vied for a piece of $404,183 in prize money. That included $23,225 paid out at that year’s NCHA Futurity. Fast-forward to 2006, and the contestants at the NCHA Futurity will be divvying up more than $3.7 million–over a hundred times the offering of that first year. Total purses at NCHA-approved shows now exceed $39 million annually.
